SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENTS ESTABLISHED IN HONOR OF FORMER VICE CHANCELLOR BARBARA ARTHURS

Barbara and Bob Arthurs, longtime supporters of Hawai‘i Community College and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, recently established two new endowed scholarships.  The scholarships were provided by Bob Arthurs in honor of the legacy that Barbara Arthurs provided during her career at both Hawai‘i CC and UH Hilo.

One scholarship endowment was established at Hawai‘i CC and one at UH Hilo through the University of Hawai‘i Foundation. The UH Hilo scholarship is specifically for students who have transferred from Hawai‘i CC.

During her career Barbara Arthurs served both Hilo campuses; she was a Counselor, Dean of Students, and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Hawai‘i CC during her 20 years of service to the campus. She was also Director of Student Support Services at UH Hilo.

“Barbara Arthurs had a positive impact on so many students, faculty and staff during her decades of service at Hawai‘i Community College and UH Hilo,” said Hawai‘i CC Interim Chancellor Joni Onishi. “These scholarship endowments ensure that her positive influence on students and our community will continue in perpetuity.”

Bob and Barbara Arthurs were honored during a luncheon Tuesday, April 26 at the Bamboo Hale fine dining restaurant on the Hawai‘i CC Manono campus in Hilo.

Attendees enjoyed a meal created by the Hawai‘i CC Culinary Arts program. Barbara Arthurs shared her experience as a student and recipient of scholarship support and described the influence it has had on her decision to give back through student scholarships.

Administrators, alumni, and current and former faculty and staff from Hawai‘i CC and UH Hilo also shared memories of Barbara’s time at the two campuses and the positive influence she had on them.

The Hawai‘i CC student scholarship is currently available for eligible students applying for financial aid for the 2016-17 academic year; the UH Hilo scholarship will become available for a student in the 2017-18 academic year.
