COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is an introduction to the technical skills and creative processes in beginning, modern and jazz dance.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Knowledge to be gained:

  1. To introduce students to a number of dance styles through in-class work and videotapes.
  2. Dance and body movement terminology.
  3. Understanding of dance as a communicative art form, which is made-up of elements, which can be observed, described, analyzed and evaluated in verbal and written form.

 Skills to be developed:

  1. Constructive rest and relaxation patterns.
  2. Centered body alignment and correct breathing patterns.
  3. Balance, flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, efficiency and range of movement.
  4. Increase in concentration and memory for loco-motor steps/patterns, kinesthetic awareness and visual/aural perception.
  5. Increase in recognizing rhythm, tempo, spatial, movement quality and level changes.

 Personal qualities to be developed:

  1. Greater confidence and expressiveness.
  2. Positive attitude toward self.
  3. Cooperative spirit in working with others.

 EVALUATION:

  1. Attendance /Attitude/ Participation/ Progress: 80%

    2. (For every two classes missed, your letter grade will drop one letter grade. No excused absences, except with physician's note. Make-ups to be explained later). The attendance policy determines your base grade (see back of sheet). From your base grade, you can move one grade up or down, depending on your attitude, progress and participation.

  2. Examination work (to be explained later): 15%
  3. Final Pau Hana Performance: 5%

(This constitutes the Final Exam, so participation is mandatory)
