2006 Resolution Regarding Tenure

Whereas, An applicant for tenure may receive conflicting advice from colleagues in the same division or department;

 

Whereas, The agreement between the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly and Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii determines, through collective bargaining, eligibility for tenure, application, review, and notification;

 

Whereas, The University of Hawai`i Community Colleges provides the guidelines for tenure and promotion and faculty classification;”

 

Whereas, The Hawai`i Community College Staff Development Committee provides tenure workshops and handouts; and

 

Whereas, The Hawai`i Community College Academic Senate Professional Standards and Code of Ethics promotes mentoring; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved That the Hawai`i Community College Academic Senate recommends that any faculty member planning to apply for tenure

 

  1. Refer to the policies and procedures regarding tenure in the Agreement between the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly and the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii;

 

  1. Consult at least a year before the dossier is due with a mentor or the division or department chair;

 

  1. Follow the guidelines for preparing the tenure dossier provided in the “Guidelines for Tenure and Promotion University of Hawai`i Community Colleges” and in the “University  of Hawai`i Community Colleges Faculty Classification Plan”;

 

  1. Attend a workshop offered by the Hawai`i Community College Staff Development Committee at least a year before the tenure application due date to receive additional guidelines and tips for preparing the dossier to include the application forms, table of contents, pagination, and appendices; and

 

  1. Provide a clear and compelling argument for tenure in the narrative section of the tenure dossier using under 50 pages as a guideline.
