COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course will provide hands on experience in the survey of Anatomy and Physiology.
Students will learn about rules and regulations for dealing with microorganisms, aseptic technique methodology, safe use of chemical agents, microscopes and other instruments.
Students will practice calculations, learn how to analyze and discuss their own hand on experimental data and prepare laboratory reports.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: After completion of Biology 142 laboratory the student should be able to:
1) Demonstrate the ability to use and understand the Scientific Method of Reasoning and apply it to their daily lives.
2) List procedural steps on carrying out their experiments and construct an organized, formal lab report.
3) Use microscopic observation, digital photography and computer microscopy to identify specific tissues and organ sections and their corresponding anatomical structures.
4) Demonstrate proper techniques to manipulate and dissect fetal pigs and other mammalian organs as required, and promote a healthy and safe laboratory environment.
5) Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the anatomy of the Reproductive, Immune, Nervous, and Excretory Systems as well as carry out experiments with our Special senses.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
Follow Biosafety Rules and Regulations
All lab participants will need to purchase and bring a Lab Coat/or smock to class on days where there are dissections. The lab coat will remain in the lab, do not show up in scrubs as you cannot leave them in lab (unless you have an extra layer of clothing)
Always where closed toed shoes in the laboratory. If you are wearing open toes, “slippahs” etc, you may not participate.
No eating any foods or snacks, chewing gum, or drinking fluids in the laboratory.
If you have “latex” allergy, please let me know as you may need to provide your own disposable gloves.
The Lab Report format is on WEBSITE and it is included in this syllabus, so that you may download it.
All lab reports must follow this format and will lose 5 points/week for lateness.
No Make-up for missing lab exercises!. (Lab reports are equal to 20
points, therefore you will receive a 0 for that particular lab)
No Make-up for missing Lab Exams or FINAL EXAM!
