COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Human Anatomy & Physiology is a 2 semester, 3 credit course, which covers the human body in extensive detail.  This is the second half of the course. The accompanying 1 credit laboratory course offers visual aids and hands-on experiences of the principles taught in the lecture. This is an intense, but fascinating course. Be prepared to work!

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

In this semester, you will learn:

  1. How the control centers of the body function to maintain homeostasis (nervous and endocrine systems)
  2. How chemicals affect behavior and mood
  3. How body fluids regulate homeostasis (fluid electrolyte balance)
  4. Why our kidneys are vital to us (urinary system)
  5. How the body defends itself against disease (immune system)
  6. Anatomy and Physiology of the Reproductive system, development& Genetics.
  7. Lastly, how all of these intricate systems tie together to create the incredible human body that we are!

Disabilities: Persons with physical or learning disabilities: let instructor know!

Course Learning Outcomes:

You will be able to apply your knowledge and skills outside the classroom in some of the following ways:

  1. You will learn the nature of the body’s most important chemicals and you may make better judgments about the medications you may take or administer
  2. You will know how common substances, such as caffeine and nicotine affect the body; you will also learn a variety of plants with known benefits to humans
  3. You will better understand the anatomy of the brain and the effects of Alzheimers disease on the mind; you will know how chemicals can affect mood. You will present ways in which chemicals affect the mind.
  4.  You will know why water is such an essential substance for the body!
  5. You will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of our body’s defense mechanisms by presenting ways in which the body defends itself

COURSE WORK:

1.  Text

You are required to read all text assignments, which accompany the lecture. You will derive more from this class if you read the text before the lecture! Reading accompany lecture topics on the following pages.

2.  Supplemental readings or handouts:

You are responsible for obtaining reading material that supplements the book.

3. Creative Project: Define the Human Spirit

Please make a collage that embodies your ideas about what the human spirit is. The project should exhibit your personal creativity, be uplifting and informative. What exactly is the human “spirit” or soul? Is it physiological? Psychological? Religious?….. You explain your views.
