Hawai'i CC Alumni Stories

Our alumni do great things and help make Hawai'i Island an incredible place to call home.

BRUCE TORRES FISCHER

Bruce Torres Fischer remembers from a young age loving the Discovery Channel, the show Crocodile Hunter, being outside, looking at animals and having a general appreciation of nature.

“It’s been a passion of mine since I was little,” Bruce said. “I want to be a biologist and want to work in conservation.”

The Natural Science program at Hawai‘i Community College has helped Bruce pursue that passion. After successfully completing many courses at Hawai'i CC, he is transferring to the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo in the fall of 2017 to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology (Cell, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences track) and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Hawaiian Studies. Read more of Bruce's story.

MODEL HOME PROJECT ALUMNI REFLECTIONS

Hawai'i Community College celebrated 50 Years of the Model Home Project in spring of 2017 as students completed the 50th home built since 1965. Hawai'i CC hosted a fun-filled, sold-out reunion event on April 28. On May 11 the college and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands turned the home over to a local family. In this video, Model Home Project alumni reflect on the impact the effort has had on their lives and in the community.

RENEE ELLORDA

Thanks to the education she received in the Electronics Technology program, Renee Ellorda’s career has taken flight.

Ellorda is the systems support center manager at the air traffic control tower at the Kona International Airport. She manages a unit of six technicians who maintain the navigation, visual aides, radar and communications equipment for the national air space facilities on the west side of Hawai‘i Island. It’s the critical equipment that air traffic controllers use to communicate with airplanes and pilots and supports the navigational services that both military and commercial pilots use.

She said the Electronics Technology program prepared her well and she’s grateful it helped her find a rewarding career.

Kevan is now the chief technician for the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Hear Kevan talk about how he became interested in geology and Hawai'i Island.

BRUCE OMORI
